PreScan™ queue-busting solution...a simple cost effective way to eliminate long checkout lines and increase customer satisfaction.
This software-based solution combines the rugged PowerScan cordless scanner with the number one name in fixed scanners, Magellan.
The PreScan application utilizes the Datalogic STAR Cordless System radio and batch memory, the PowerScan® PM8300-D and an integrated Magellan® in-counter scanner to effectively move your customers through the checkout process.

Datalogic Scanning’s PreScan queue-busting software application provides a simple, cost effective way to improve front-end throughput. Using Datalogic’s cordless PowerScan® PM8300-D handheld reader coupled with a Magellan® 2000, 8000 or 9000 Series scanner or scanner/scale, retailers can implement a queue-busting application without costly point-of-sale (POS) software modifications.
PreScan Single and Multi-Lane Configurations
The PreScan software can be configured in two different modes of operation: Single Lane or Multi-Lane.
Single Lane Mode
In Single Lane mode, a sales assistant can scan customers’ items while they are waiting in line. When the customer reaches the POS terminal, the sales assistant scans a code on the checkout lane and items stored in the handheld scanner are downloaded to the POS terminal. Once tendering is complete, the customer is on their way.
In Single Lane mode, one base station is dedicated to each front-end lane. Retailers can equip all front-end lanes so that each lane has a cordless scanner that can be used for both queue-busting as well as dedicated in-lane scanning.
Multi-Lane Mode
In Multi-Lane mode, a single handheld scanner can be combined with multiple base stations. This mode is particularly suited to retail configurations where customers wait in a single line for the next available cashier.
Each POS terminal is equipped with a separate base station. Just as in the Single Lane mode, a sales assistant can scan customers’ items while they are standing in line. When the customer reaches the POS terminal, they present a unique ID card, and items stored in the handheld scanner are downloaded to the terminal.
PreScan Software and the PowerScan PM8300 Handheld Reader
The PowerScan PM8300 cordless reader is a rugged handheld scanner, designed to withstand the tough demands of front-end retail scanning. With PreScan software, it can easily be converted between queue-busting or dedicated in-lane scanning. During non-peak hours, cashiers can use the cordless scanner to scan bulky or heavy items located in a customer’s shopping cart. One scanner can be used for both operations.
Datalogic’s STAR Cordless System™ is the backbone of the PowerScan PM8300-D reader’s reliable two-way wireless communications. With the STAR Cordless System, multiple base stations can connect with multiple handheld scanners. Datalogic’s patented Green Spot, and the keypad with display on the handheld reader provides feedback to the remote cashier while scanning customers’ items. Memory capacity allows for scanning up to 300 items, divided into separate baskets for up to 16 customers.
The PM8300 base station conveniently attaches to the auxiliary port of most Datalogic Magellan scanner/scales. Data from the cordless scanner is transmitted from the auxiliary port to the POS system using the existing POS interface. No costly POS software modifications are necessary. Some POS systems support the direct connection of the PowerScan cordless reader directly to the POS. Depending on the configuration requirements, this may be a preferred option.

The data is referenced to a unique ID card.
Merchandise is pre-scanned with a PowerScan® PM8300 Reader.
The card is swiped at the register and the transaction is completed.
